BRISBANE TECHIES ITCHING FOR PRIVATE CAPITAL

BRISBANE'S startup community is gaining a huge boost with free seminars teaching entrepreneurs how to access private capital to launch in October.

Digital Brisbane has teamed up with MaRS Discovery District's Entrepreneur 101 program to help entrepreneurs commercialise their technologies through private enterprise.

The program will be free, live, and beamed into River City Labs each week from 1 October.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says the six month program will be of huge assistance to entrepreneurs wanting to market their technological ideas to the world.

"MaRS is a live online course broadcast to entrepreneurs who are ready to take the next step in their business and grow their digital idea," says Quirk.

"This program was a key recommendation in the Brisbane 2022 New World City Action Plan to inspire our city's future startup entrepreneurs."

MaRS CEO Ilse Treurnicht says the program will help nurture the next generation of Brisbane companies that will be the foundation of tomorrow's knowledge economy.

"The focus [of Entrepreneur 101] is on creating relevant, real-time content through contextual experience-based learning opportunities for entrepreneurs that are in the process of building those companies," says Treurnicht.

Quirk has also announced that the next round of funding for the Budding Entrepreneurs Program will open on 1 October and close on 31 October.

The program offers grants of $5000 for entrepreneurs to attend a startup event, obtain professional advice, join a support program, undertake education, or participate in a trade mission.

Quirk says the program has been a resounding success so far.

"The Budding Entrepreneurs Program is one of Digital Brisbane's most successful initiatives, with the past four rounds attracting more than 420 applications and leading to some great new Brisbane technology startups," says Quirk.

"In Brisbane we have a growing community of exciting and inventive start-ups with low-entry costs, and the potential to reach global markets and bring significant investment into the Brisbane economy."
