SURPRISE NO.1 AS TOP PRIVATE COMPANIES REVEALED AND RANKED

FOR once, Clive Palmer is not top dog.

A family name that has been synonymous with local business for more than 50 years has grabbed the No.1 spot as Brisbane Business News publishes its annual Top 50 Private Companies edition (pictured).

This is the first time Brisbane Business News has ranked the city’s leading private companies.

Palmer, the state’s richest individual, grabs a lofty position on our Top 50 list based on his non-listed and private interests. But under our ranking criteria, he is trumped by a second generation privately-owned company that has revenues exceeding $1.1 billion, employs more than 4200 people and shown sustained growth in challenging economic times.

Businesses were assessed on revenue, staff, turnover, growth and economic impact across the 2011-12 financial year. Innovation, sustainability and interaction with the local community were also considered.

The Top 50 Private Companies are business high-achievers that collectively boast revenues of $23.6 billion, employ more than 52,000 Queenslanders and operate in at least 22 different industries.

The secrets of their success are featured in profiles that are compelling and inspirational.
