Kochie to remain in the public eye after scoring new role at Compare the Market

Former Sunrise host David Koch has landed a gig as economic director of price comparison website Compare the Market after being approached by the company to become its voice on economic issues and personal finance.

The move keeps Koch in the public eye as the company plans to use the long-time breakfast TV personality to provide ‘insight and expertise’ to the Compare the Market team while also delivering commentary to the media on the company’s research.

“It’s a natural fit for me to help Compare the Market customers to make the best decisions and give them the information they need to make better decisions with their money,” Koch says.

“My whole career has been about advising average Australians to shop around, to get the best deal. Financial institutions don’t care about your loyalty. You’ve got to take control by getting the best deal no matter who offers it.”

Koch, who still fronts the Kochie’s Business Builders platform for small businesses, says he was chuffed to have been approached to take on the job.

“For me, it’s always been so important to find roles where I can make a difference and I’m not comfortable sitting back when I have the power to help,” he says.

“People have been hit from every direction with soaring energy bills, insurance premiums, and mortgage rates - forcing many into tough financial decisions. Australian households have not been under this sort of pressure for a generation.”

Koch reveals that his wife Libby has been an advocate of Compare the Market for the past decade.

“She’s like a Compare the Market disciple. So, when I went home and said ‘hey, Compare the Market want me to be associated with them’, she went, ‘perfect, I know it backwards’.

“Look, in the last five years I reckon we’ve had three different health insurance providers because Lib refuses to pay renewal on a premium without checking Compare the Market - and every time she’s found a better deal.”

Compare the Market CEO Rob Clancy says that in the new role, Koch will lead the company’s research and commentary ‘on a wide range of issues affecting Australians’.

“Kochie’s appointment as our economic director comes as so many Australians are in need of a cost-of-living champion,” Clancy says.

“We started our comparison service just over 10 years ago, with a mission to help people save on their home loans, insurance and energy bills and we’ve since helped millions of Australians compare and switch to suit their needs and their budget.

“Kochie’s extensive credentials in finance and business journalism will take our research to the next level and ensure we can help Australians make better every-day financial decisions.”
