GOLDEN GAVEL RECAP

GOLDEN GAVEL RECAP
THE Golden Gavel has been Queensland Young Lawyers’ (QYL) most successful event of the year, selling out to a crowd of more than 210 lawyers.

The event is an opportunity for Brisbane's funniest young lawyers to show off their comedic skills.

Talent spotlighted this year included Mark Grdovich, Denis Beattie, Eliza Saul, Matthew Littlejohn, Julian Creagh, Peter Sams, Liz Talbot, Stephen Arulogun, and Thomas Lynch.

Speakers solicited laughter from topics such as Spellcheck yourself before you wreck yourself. Lawyers: ‘grammar police’ of the modern era and Better call Saul! Lawyer advertising in the digital age.

This year’s winner was Matthew Littlejohn, the runner-up was Thomas Lynch, the people's choice was awarded to Peter Sams, and best zinger went to Denis Beattie.

QYL had assistance from the honourable justice McMurdo on the evening, who wore his funny hat, and judges Petrina Macpherson, Steven Hogg and Marc McKechnie.

The event was supported by sponsors VISIS Private Wealth, Genero, Law in Order, U&U, LexisNexis, The 400 Co and UBER, who donated spectacular prizes on the evening.

A special thanks goes to Julian Creagh for his assistance with the event, Leanne Doxy for writing this year’s topics, and Georgina Cleveland and Phillip Ridgway for organising the event.

QYL’s next event is its annual general meeting on 25 September 2014 at Newstead Brewing Co.

Anyone wanting to contact QYL can do so on [email protected] or through Facebook and LinkedIn.
