The Gold Coast's reputation as a global surfing destination has attracted a major surfing conference to its sunny shores.
The 2020 Global Wave Conference has picked the Gold Coast as its host, attracting up to 400 surf experts from around the world.
Coolangatta received unanimous support to host the sixth bi-annual Global Wave Conference (GWC) in 2020.
The GWC is hosted by Save The Waves Coalition and its partners Surfrider Foundation, Surfers Against Sewerage and Conservation International.
GWC executive director Nik Strong Cvetich says the group is excited to take the conference to such an important surfing destination.
"We are thrilled to see the Global Wave Conference go to Gold Coast in 2020 as it is the 8th World Surfing Reserve," says Cvetich.
The 2020 event will mark the sixth GWC. The conference was established in the Canary Islands, followed by Biarritz, Mexico, UK, and Santa Cruz.
"Gold Coast will be such an exciting venue for the 6th biannual held the week before the World Surfing League world tour event at Snapper Rocks and in the year that surfing is introduced into the Olympics for the first time," says Cvetich.
The event will attract surfing academics, marine scientists, ocean conservationists, industry leaders, and champions of the sport to the Gold Coast to address issues and concerns faced by the sport and how to seek solutions for its sustainable future.
Southern Cross University and Griffith University will both be involved with the GWC.
