After spending years on developing the ideal plant-based infant formula, Gold Coast-based Sprout Organic has beaten out competition at the World Food Innovation Awards to take home ‘Best Children’s Product’.

The prize comes 10 months after founder and serial entrepreneur Selasi Berdie debuted the milk to the market, where it made more than 300 sales within the first 48 hours.

Developed for babies under a year old, the formula is manufactured in the Gold Coast and consists of organic rice starch, organic oil blend, rice protein and more.

“We’re incredibly honoured to receive this award,” said former Gold Coast Titans player Berdie, who was announced as the winner during a special ceremony in association with International Food and Drink Event in the United Kingdom.

"It’s a true validation of the last seven years of hard work in developing such a needed product, and we are so pleased to be able to provide parents across the world with this choice."

The idea to develop an infant formula came when Berdie’s wife Jen suffered from a mastitis infection and the couple failed to find a plant-based alternative.

To serve it, the milk formula is mixed in water at 50-70 degrees Celsius and shaken for a few extra seconds.

The award comes a year after Sprout secured a deal with Global by Nature and Total Health to see its plant-based food range stocked by retailers in New South Wales and Western Australia.

The new deal was a coup for the brand, which launched its first commercial products – an organic range of snack bars for kids – two years ago, and is present in more than 600 retailers around the country.

Sprout Organic is one of several enterprises that are clients of HYPE Group – a company founded by Berdie and business partner Miles Muecke which promotes wellness brands with digital marketing services.

“This year’s awards really showcase some of the most exciting new products and developments of the year and we want to say a huge congratulations to Sprout Organic for being successfully crowned as the winner of Best Children’s Product,” FoodBev media marketing executive Jonathan McGowan said.

Sprout Organic was the only Australian company to win a category at the awards. The judging panel evaluated 272 entries from 22 countries across 25 categories.
