Gold Coast council gives green light to controversial luxury apartment project at Currumbin

Sydney developer Arena Property Group has secured final council approval to proceed with a controversial apartment development in the Gold Coast beachside suburb of Currumbin after objections by residents were quashed by a court in December last year.

The four-level luxury project, which faced a Planning and Environment Court appeal last year by residents following council approval granted in 2021, is earmarked for a 785sqm site at 798-800 Pacific Parade, which is currently occupied by a two-level block of old flats and a Queenslander house.

When completed, the Kora apartment project will deliver seven apartments in what Arena Property Group describes as the first ‘major multi-residential addition to the coastal suburb in many years’.

“Kora is a new product for the area that will appeal to a broad demographic,” says Arena’s development manager Ray Bachir.

“It’s a great design that offers the iconic Gold Coast lifestyle of suburbs like Palm Beach, while still respecting the unique character and history of Currumbin.”

Kora will be located along the Currumbin foreshore which is among the most tightly held coastal enclaves in the city.

Bachir says Kora’s ‘quietly confident’ design will set a new standard for architecture on the suburb’s beach-side strip. The project has been designed by national firm Plus Architecture which has an extensive portfolio on the Gold Coast.

Arena Property Group has yet to reveal pricing for the apartments, which will share a communal rooftop area and wellness centre. The company plans to do so once the project is officially launched to the market in the next couple of months.

Friends of Currumbin and the Tugun Progress Association had led the fight against the proposed development following its approval in 2021, arguing that the scale of the project would diminish the area’s character and amenity.

The council has now given the project the final green light in the wake of the Planning and Environment Court’s decision last year.

Kora will not be the tallest building along Pacific Parade, which is home to the Currumbin Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Elephant Rock, the Gold Coast’s most popular venue for Anzac Day dawn services.

The tallest building in the street is the decades-old Rocks Resort which stands about 12 storeys. However, under the new city plan, future developments in the area will be limited to 12 metres.
