COMMUNITY FUND INJECTION EXPECTED TO RETURN MILLIONS

THE ADELAIDE City Council expects to raise the city's tourism profile by signing off on a year-long strategy for major sponsorship funding of community-based initiatives.

With a view to bringing in more than $240 million to the South Australian economy and inviting more than 3.9 million visitors to the capital, several support grants have been issued to a variety of chosen programs within the Arts, Cultural, Sporting, Recreation and Events sectors.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese (pictured) says the funding allows the council to directly support home-grown endeavours, bolstering the state's economy in the process.

"These wonderful initiatives provide an economic boost, encourage more visitors to our city and enhance Adelaide's reputation as a social, cultural and sporting hub," says Lord Mayor Haese.

Organisations set to benefit from council backing include the Migrant Resource Centre's refugee arts and community development program, the Women's Recreational Running Network and the Clipsal 500 motorsport event.

Lord Mayor Haese says more than $1.5 million of the total donated sum has also been committed to sponsorship for a number of major city events including the Adelaide Film Festival, Bridgestone World Solar Challenge and the Lunar New Year Street Party.

"These events provide an economic benefit through increased revenue and visitors to the city while continuing to strengthen Adelaide's reputation as a vibrant, fun and inclusive place for all people," says Lord Mayor Haese.
