Gaven MP scathes Bligh over unemployment figures

THERE has been a 14 per cent rise in unemployment in the Gaven electorate in the past month, according to local MP Alex Douglas.

Douglas says the latest Centrelink statistics from the Nerang office show the number of people on unemployment benefits rose by 299 people for the month of May. Queensland has the single biggest increase in new people receiving benefits in the month to April 2009 with 3614 unemployed.

“In Gaven, a record increase of 14 per cent or 299 people are now receiving unemployment benefits,” says Douglas.

“These figures are extremely concerning especially considering the Nerang office recorded the greatest increase on the Gold Coast. Clearly this shows that the people of the Gaven electorate cannot count on Anna Bligh to look after their jobs.”
