Route of Gold Coast Light Rail stage three revealed

Stage three of the Gold Coast Light Rail is underway and the government is calling for locals to weigh in on plans for its development.

New footage has been released showing the proposed route extending from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads and residents who live in suburbs along the line are being encouraged to share their feedback.

Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon says community opinion will be crucial to the development of the rail which has seen a 33 per cent increase in patronage since December last year.

"Community consultation is a vital part of any project of this size and we are keen to hear from locals to help inform this process," she says.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the government will run public sessions so that residents can comment on the reference design and understand the proposal.

"These drop-in sessions will provide an opportunity for locals to speak with project team members about stage 3A planning and the current reference design," says Bailey.

"The community will be able to view maps of the reference design for the proposed route in the centre of the Gold Coast Highway as well as proposed station locations, traffic lanes and intersection changes.

"Population growth continues to place increasing pressure on the city's road network which is why planning for this extension of the light rail system is essential."

Burleigh Heads and Nobby Beach are earmarked for new urban design elements as part of the project, according to Mayor Tom Tate.

He says the council has committed $5 million to the project, matching the $5 million investment injected by the State Government.

Members of the community will be able to provide feedback on the light rail stage 3A plans between 1 August and 1 September 2018 via an online survey at gclr3a.com.au.

Information events will take place on Wednesday 15 August and Wednesday 22 August at the Burleigh Heads Surf Club and the Mermaid Beach Surf Club respectively.
