Jones Day announces foray into Melbourne

Law firm Jones Day has announced that it will open a new office in Melbourne next month, taking its global tally of offices to 43.

This marks the firm's fourth office Australia-wide after it first expanded to Sydney in 1998 and then again in 2014 and 2016 with its Perth and Brisbane offices respectively.

Managing partner of Jones Day, Stephen J. Brogan, says the decision to move into Melbourne is indicative of the country's growing presence worldwide.

"Opening in Melbourne is in response to Australia's growing role in the global economy, the importance of Melbourne as a centre for corporate Australia, and the Firm's commitment to the country," says Brogan.

The new firm will initially include practice areas such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), intellectual property, restructuring and disputes.

Jones Day says it is well placed to service areas including the financial services, energy, mining, infrastructure and pharmaceutical industries.

Chris Ahern, partner-in-charge of Australia and Japan for Jones Day, says Melbourne is an "important legal market" which will help boost overseas partnerships.

"In combination with our offices in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, [Melbourne] creates a critical mass of legal experience across the four major legal markets in Australia," says Ahern.

"As a fully integrated global partnership we are able to serve Australian clients seamlessly by collaborating with our leading lawyers in the U.S., Europe, Middle East, Latin America, and Asia."
