GOVERNOR OPENS WORLD CLASS FACILITY AT GRIFFITH

GRIFFITH University has launched its new Criminology Institute (GCI) at a recent ceremony attended by members of the general public and special guests including the Queensland Governor.

Having now officially opened the doors, the Honourable Paul de Jersey (pictured right) says the new building is a facility expected to rival the world's elite.

"All Queenslanders can be very proud that this institute through its excellence in both teaching and research now leads Australia in the fields of criminology and criminal justice," says de Jersey.

The GCI has been outfitted with a million dollar secure crime data home, The Crimelab, which is a unique facility to assist in student learning within key areas including corrections and sentencing, crime pathways, prevention and violence.

Director of the new GCI Professor Ross Coomber says Griffith has ranked among the top players with regards to Criminological output and that this new headquarters will be a base for strengthening strong collaborative ties both locally and overseas.

"The institute's aim is to produce cutting-edge knowledge that helps create safe, just, well governed and equitable societies," says Coomber.

"It will continue to strengthen Griffith's place as world leading in criminology and apply critical thinking and research for maximum impact and positive contributions to society."
