BCF FANTASTIC SANS PLASTIC

RECREATION retailer Boating, Camping, Fishing (BCF) is removing plastic bags from its 64 stores, following a successful transition to ‘environmental bags’ across its South Australian network last year, similar to those used by supermarket chains.

The Super Cheap Auto Group subsidiary’s chief operating officer Steve Doyle, says the decision to offer customers $1 environmental bags was not difficult, considering the company’s passion for protecting Australia’s natural assets.

“As well as being a part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, we just simply didn’t want to see any more plastic bags where they shouldn’t be,” he says.

“Our business has a strong environmental focus, with the BCF team and loyal customers who are really passionate about protecting parks and waterways that we all spend so much time enjoying.”

Green Bag Australia general manager Elizabeth Kasell says if an environmental bag is used properly over its two-year average lifetime, it will replace 1200 single-use plastic bags.

“A lot of people say they like plastic bags as they can use them as bin liner, and we say that’s great because it’s another use, but at the supermarket they usually give between five and 10 plastic bags,” she says.

“They probably won’t use all of them as bin liners.”
