Amazon gears up for $490m investment in new warehouses for Western Sydney

Amazon's proposed new fulfilment centre at Horsley Park

Amazon Australia is gearing up for a $490 million investment in Western Sydney with plans to open two new fulfilment centres in Horsley Park by early 2026.

The first, a purpose-build facility totalling 80,000sqm, is currently under way with a capacity to hold up to 1.6 million large items sold on Amazon.

The second, a smaller development of 33,400sqm, will comprise the fitout of an existing building, giving Amazon capacity for an additional 600,000 larger items.

The refurbished facility is set to open later this year, with both projects expected to generate 3,500 construction jobs by the time they are completed.

“Amazon Australia’s investment in two new facilities in Western Sydney will expand our operational footprint in this area which will provide customers with wider selection and faster delivery,” says Sandra McNeil, Amazon Australia’s operations manager.

“We are committed to improving selection and delivery speed as demand continues to grow, as well as being dedicated to giving back to the communities in which we operate.

“We are proud to be able to provide more local job opportunities and look forward to working with the NSW Government to continue our investment in the Western Sydney area.”

The two facilities are expected to support more than 1,000 jobs when completed, with roles ranging from entry level positions offering on-the-job training, to skilled roles in areas such as operations, HR, engineering and workplace health and safety.

“At the new sites, Amazon Australia will offer a diverse range of job opportunities in a high-tech, industry-leading workplace ranging from IT, HR and technology professionals, to associates who will pick, pack and ship items to customers,” says McNeil.

“The majority of jobs will be permanent full-time roles, with leading pay and comprehensive benefits such as subsidised private healthcare and up to 20 weeks of maternity pay.”

The new fulfilment centres add to three existing Amazon centres in Sydney, with the first established at Moorebank in 2018.

Amazon has invested more than $1.5 billion to Western Sydney, including the opening of a robotics fulfilment centre in Kemps Creek in 2022 and a logistic site in Regents Park.

Both of the new Horsley Park fulfilment centres will be equipped with advanced technology to assist Amazon’s team as they pick and pack items.

The NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, says the planned investment is an “important part of Amazon’s continued commitment to Western Sydney”, adding that the government is committed to ensure that “serious planning proposals come to fruition”.

Jason Little, CEO Australia, Goodman Group (ASX: GMG) which owns the Oakdale Industrial Estate in the Horsley Park logistics hub, says the commitment by Amazon is the result of “great collaboration with planning authorities and administrators to boost the Western Sydney economy”.

“Goodman has invested significantly in the area, and this development extends Goodman’s infrastructure spend in the Western Sydney employment area to more than $500 million,” says Little.
