GAMES VILLAGE DEVELOPER SHORTLISTED

THREE developers have been shortlisted to build the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Village.

The shortlisted parties include Grocon, a partnership between Mirvac Queensland and Laing O’Rourke Australia Constructions and Village Park Consortium, comprising Australand Holdings and Citta Property Group.

Although none of the shortlisted developers have headquarters on the Gold Coast, most have a footprint in the city.

Grocon delivered the Soul and Oracle projects while Mirvac developed luxury residential community Ephraim Island.

Laing O’Rourke was awarded the design and construct contract for a $110 million teaching facility to house the Griffith Health Centre at Griffith University Gold Coast campus and Australand Holdings was behind the Cova residential community near Hope Island.

Commonwealth Games minister Jann Stuckey says the company and two consortia were invited to participate in the Request for Proposal, overseen by the Commonwealth Games Infrastructure Authority and state government body Economic Development Queensland.

They will now submit proposals including master plans and commercial offers for the Commonwealth Games Village.

“Construction of the Commonwealth Games Village and overall redevelopment of Parklands will be one of the most significant urban renewal projects undertaken on the Gold Coast,” says Stuckey.

She says response to the call for expressions was strong.

“It’s encouraging to see a strong representation from developers with a Queensland presence,” she says.

“Each has a track record of delivering major projects, the financial capability to deliver and importantly, each supports the vision for the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct – a significant legacy outcome.”

Deputy Premier and state development, infrastructure and planning minister, Jeff Seeney says the chosen developer will benefit from preparatory works, due to begin in October.

The developer will be chosen by early 2014 with permanent works and construction to then begin in July of that year.
