ABS DATA SHOWS UNEMPLOYMENT AT 5.4%

AN economic recovery post natural disasters is taking place according to Treasurer Andrew Fraser after the ABS released labour force data showing a decrease in the trend unemployment rate and a surge in full time employment.

ABS data released today shows the unemployment rate fell from 5.5 per cent to 5.4 per cent in March and that an overall decrease of 400 jobs was due to a shedding of part-time positions.

“The month of April saw 1 900 full time jobs created in Queensland and while we’re still seeing part-time positions lost, the move by employers to create full time positions is encouraging,” says Fraser.

“Queensland has gone through a tough few months following the summer of floods and cyclones so seeing more people in full-time work is a good sign the economy is on the mend.

“As the reconstruction effort continues, we will be acting to ensure the economic recovery continues.”

The seasonally adjusted Australian unemployment rate remained steady at 4.9 per cent in April according to the ABS.
