Three Gold Coast tech entrepreneurs have turned Australia's telecommunications landscape on its head by creating their own broadband network that offers speeds up to 10 times faster than the NBN.
The founders of AFT Communications Adam Hargraves, Fernando Piozzi and Trevor Coleman have already helped hundreds of residents and struggling local businesses in Robina, Burleigh, Coolangatta, Kingscliff, Palm Beach, Currumbin, Southport, Main Beach, Varsity Lakes, Chevron Island and Sovereign Island.
They've connected them with high-speed internet with download speeds of up to 1Gbps, up to 10 times faster than the NBN's retail offering (which is is based on the 100Mbps maximum retail NBN deals sold by telcos).
"We were tired of slow, sub-par internet from the big telcos," says Adam Hargraves, who built AFT Communications' networks with 200 microwave radio dishes that eliminate the need for copper or fibre connections.
"We just decided to make our own network, completely separate from Telstra and the NBN, that gives people what they want."
Hargraves says Gold Coast residents and businesses needed to know that there is a better alternative to the NBN offering.
"Australia is in desperate need of internet that is fast, reliable and affordable, backed by real Australian support," he says.
He also says poor internet speeds are putting the livelihoods of Australian business operators at risk.
"We've had clients in data-heavy businesses telling us AFT Communications' service has saved their business," he says.
"Some current NBN customers I talk to complain that speeds are worse than before the NBN switchover.
"For a public utility like the NBN to be failing Australia's business sector is a situation we had to act on."
Hargraves also says the government's proposed additional tax levy on internet service providers (ISPs) using the NBN would undoubtedly be passed on to consumers.
"AFT Communications aims to alleviate the stresses associated with getting fast and reliable internet for Gold Coast residents and businesses."
