HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR HELIX LEGAL FOUNDERS

THE blood, sweat, and tears that has gone into creating Helix Legal have finally paid off for Director and Partner Janelle Kerrisk.

The law firm, still in its infancy relative to other Queensland law firms, has gone from strength to strength since its inception.

Recently, Kerrisk was awarded a National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) for achievement as a business woman. Kerrisk says the award validates the hard work put in to establish Helix Legal.

"The award is very validating and it's good to know that I haven't lost my mind!" says Kerrisk.

"In the beginning some people thought I was crazy to walk away from equity partnership in a big firm. I think there is something a little bit scary about walking away from what you've been building for your entire career."

The awards, run by the Queensland chapter of the NAWIC, celebrate the contributions made by women at all career levels and in all sectors of the construction industry.

At Helix, Kerrisk has been working on establishing a fresh way to approach the legal sector one with a serious focus on how technology and the law can be better used together.

"Outside of law and construction technology is something that is used really commonly, but the legal industry has been a bit slower to take up some of those things," says Kerrisk.

"We have been able to embrace it. It means being able to work collaboratively on documents in real time, with clients in Germany and law clerks in Paris."

In addition to being very switched on to legal-tech, Helix Legal practices exclusively in the construction and energy sectors. On top of all that, the group continues to develop innovative legal-tech products.

Though the award was specifically for Kerrisk, she says the award is important for the firm's reputation too.

"For Helix Legal it is great for us to be recognised within the industry," says Kerrisk.

"We've had a good run of recognition within the legal sector because we're doing things in a different way, but it's also important for us because we identify ourselves as really being ingrained in the construction industry, not just in the legal industry."
