MILLENNIALS, FREELANCERS & INTERNS: THE NEXT BIG THINGS

MILLENNIALS, FREELANCERS & INTERNS: THE NEXT BIG THINGS
WORKPLACES are being urged to adapt to the latest trends to sweep the workforce, or else be displaced in the greater scheme of things.

Boss millennials, freelancers and interns are types on the rise; while working remotely, work life integration and fast talent turnaround are equally trending.

These predictions have been penned by Expert360, an online platform matching professional freelancers with short term business projects.

The generation regarded as a mixed bag the millennials is proving to have a lot of drive, with a recent study by Forbes revealing that 72 per cent would like to be their own boss.

Perhaps a more startling statistic is that by 2020, 40 per cent of the total working population will be millennials, which combined with the economy means internships will be critical to the world of work.

This, coupled with 30 per cent of Australians currently undertaking some form of flexible freelance work, and this figure fast rising in line with US trends, means that bricks and mortar infrastructure will decline in importance and technological infrastructure will soar.

The report says FOMO (fear of missing out) is keeping everyone engaged, and cautions employers against "hoarding employees" on the premise this will be detrimental to business in the long run.

It seems career and talent development programs are key to making employees want to stay, as well as hiring based on the premise of character more so than skill to ensure a cultural fit.

Since its founding in July 2013, Expert360 has grown to a network of more than 3000 top consultants across Australasia, North America, Europe and the Middle East, cutting across industry from retail to investment and consulting.
