DRIVING SAFETY INTO THE MINES

DRIVING SAFETY INTO THE MINES

AFTER starting a small vehicle solutions company in 2005, Minecorp Vehicle Solutions founder Mark Lacey has opened his third store in Queensland, with further regional sites in the pipeline. Several international stores are due to be unveiled including in Chile and South Africa this year and the company now boasts more than 30 distributors both nationally and abroad. Founder and director Mark Lacey shares a few leadership tips with Brisbane Business News.

What motivated you to start your own company?

Minecorp was started as there was a need for a dedicated one-stop shop to provide quality vehicle safety solutions primarily for the mining industry. There were a number of vehicle accessory companies dabbling in mine vehicle fit-outs and vehicle safety products, however there was no dedicated solution. As we have grown we have found that our diverse range of safety-orientated products are in demand within other related sectors such as exploration, oil, gas and civil fleet.

How did you develop your products and services?

We liaise with our clients as well as key players in the industry to understand the wants and needs of the market. This market information allows our research and development department to improve existing and develop new products through the use of proven engineering practices while ensuring we meet all of the relevant guidelines such as ADRs and local transport authority guidelines.

How are you expanding your business abroad?

We have a dedicated international business department that solely focuses on overseas trade.

We currently have two Minecorp branded stores overseas - one in South Africa and one in Chile as well as numerous distributors. We frequently travel to overseas locations to secure and expand work abroad.

What is the Minecorp mission statement?

When coming up with the mission statement we were keen to encapsulate our passion for saving lives while conveying a clear and simple message about what we do.

We looked at a number of global companies and how they conveyed their message with end result being ‘We do vehicle safety’.

What leadership skills do you bring to the table?

To culminate the ideas from the team and encourage change through empowerment and accountability.

What’s the team culture like there?

Our team at Minecorp is the cream of the crop, each hand selected for their skills and abilities in specific areas of business and related industries. Each person brings their own experience and perspective to the table and when you combine this with their individual talents you have a strong basis for growth and success.

Do you have a leadership mantra?

Lead by example – do what you say you are going to do.

How important is taking risks in your business?

Taking risks is part and parcel of any business decision. In each case this needs to be calculated as to whether the reward is worth the risk.
