CONSTRUCTION OF $15M AIRPORT FACILITY TAKES OFF

BRISBANE International Airport (pictured) will accommodate a $15 million infrastructure addition with a processing gateway and offices by international express provider DHL Express.

Construction of the facility will commence in the next month, including a 3507 sqm warehouse and 769 sqm office at the corner of Lomandra Drive and Boronia Road.

They replace the existing 4690 sqm warehouse and 350 sqm office at the old Brisbane international terminal.

“These new facilities and our strategic focus on Brisbane are in response to significant growth in our international business in the region,” says DHL Express Oceania senior vice-president Gary Edstein.

Brisbane Airport Corporation will undertake the works as part of DHL’s 10-year strategic initiative to invest in the region. The two companies have finalised a 10-year lease with options for the facility in the airport’s ‘Da Vinci’ precinct.

Offices will house more than 100 DHL personnel covering operations, sales, customs brokerage, gateway export and import. There will also be a processing gateway including high-speed re-weigh technology that is promised to improve outbound processing between 10 and 15 per cent.

DHL’s 2011 export barometer forecasts sluggish export order growth for Queensland, but the business is upbeat about the state’s outlook for 2012.

“Despite Queensland’s flood-hit economy and continued global uncertainty, we have seen business in Brisbane grow by over 25 per cent in the past year. This has been driven by an increase in consumer shipments – propelled by the continued expansion of online retailing and mining,” says Edstein.

“Businesses in Brisbane are dynamic, varying from farming to fashion. Coupled with Brisbane’s potential as a gateway to assist with the growth in Papua New Guinea and our strong relationships with Brisbane Airport Corporation, we are looking forward to the years ahead with great confidence for the region.”

DHL last year relocated its national customer service centre to Roma Street.
