TOURISM STRATEGY PAYS OFF
THE tourism industry continues to take off, contributing $23 billion to the Queensland economy last year according to State Tourism Satellite Account findings.

Minister for tourism Jann Stuckey says the government’s DestinationQ strategy contributed $3.5 billion to the growth in the last two years.

“The data shows that tourism is creating jobs for Queensland with a 13 per cent increase in tourism employment over the last two years.

“The Newman Government moved quickly to recognise tourism as one of the four pillars of the Queensland economy and we have worked diligently with industry to reboot tourism, stimulate economic growth and create jobs for Queenslanders,” she says.

Stuckey says the department is working with operators to restore confidence and increase visitors to the state.

“Destination Success, our 20 year plan for tourism outlines our aspirations and what will set Queensland apart as a destination of choice on the national and international stage, both now and in to the future.

“Partnerships and shared vision like this will help the Newman Government together with industry achieve our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion in 2020.”

She says the tourism industry provides 241,000 jobs, an increase of 27,000 in recent years.
