TOURISM JOY AS AIRPORT ARRIVALS SOAR 21 PER CENT

GOLD COAST Airport has recorded a 21 per cent increase in international passengers for the month of July in comparison with last year.

The boost comes at the end of the first full month of operation for Singapore’s new low-cost entrant Scoot and is a heartening sign that the tourism industry may finally be emerging from its slump.

The airport also recorded an increase of eight per cent in domestic passengers.

Queensland Airports Limited managing director Dennis Chant says Singapore wasn’t the only international service assisting growth at Gold Coast Airport, with Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand also performing well.

He says growth in domestic passenger numbers could be a response to the reinstatement of Tiger Airways following its 2011 grounding.

“Tiger Airways re-commenced their daily Sydney service in July and our trunk routes of Melbourne and Sydney performed well across all airline partners,” says Chant.
