SCU flying ahead

GOLD Coast Airport boss Dennis Chant says the continued development of the Southern Cross University campus on Gold Coast Airport land will provide significant economic and positive social impacts for both the Gold Coast and Tweed regions.

Chant’s comments follow the approval of the major development plan for Building B of the SCU campus.

“The establishment of a permanent, large-scale University campus in the Southern Gold Coast (and) Tweed area is significant. The project will provide local employment and educational opportunities not currently available in the region,” says Chant.

The long-term education investment is invaluable.

“The Gold Coast region has a smaller proportion of the population with bachelor or post graduate qualifications compared to the rest of the county and the university will assist in addressing this issue through the provision of world-class tertiary educational facilities in the southern Queensland area.”

Chant has also welcomed the central location chosen by SCU within the airport precinct, citing access from the Tugun Bypass and Gold Coast Highway and links to council’s pedestrian and cycleway network and existing public transport available within the airport.

“We received positive feedback from the different levels of government and the community when this plan was publicly presented,” says Chant.

Construction of Building A is ahead of schedule and is due to open in early 2010.
