TEMPORARY LAWYERS 'ORBITING' IN BRISBANE

CORRS Chambers Westgrath (CCW) has launched a new legal resourcing business, offering part-time and flexible services to its clients.

Orbit is set to commence delivery of its offerings in 2015 and will provide temporary lawyers to facilitate the management of legal matters such as secondments and urgent projects and can fill a temporary gap in a companys in-house legal team.

Orbit lawyers are engaged as independent short term contractors and instead of being employed by Orbit or CCW, are an incorporated legal practice or a sole practitioner.

Corrs Chief Operating Officer Jon Kenton (pictured) says the Orbit model is well established in the US and European markets, but Corrs is the first law firm to offer this model in Australia.

"We are working hard to innovate to meet more of our clients needs, while also pioneering new career options for lawyers," he says.

Corrs Partner and Practice Group Leader of Employment, Workplace Relations and Safety, John Tuck, says Orbit was created in response to clients changing requirements and to help the growing numbers of lawyers interested in a different way of working.

"Increasingly, our clients want access to high calibre lawyers who can work with their teams on a flexible basis," says Tuck.

"Orbit lawyers will have the capacity to resource critical and day to day projects and provide flexibility to businesses in managing their legal teams and their costs.

"We know more lawyers want to balance their personal and career goals and many are looking for new ways of working. They want to work at the top of their field but they also want more opportunity to pursue other interests."
