Super Retail Group draws from within to appoint new chief

Super Retail Group Limited (ASX: SUP) has appointed its current outdoor retailing managing director Anthony Heraghty to replace the long-serving Peter Birtles as chief executive and managing director of the company.

Heraghty, who joined the retail giant's leadership team in 2015, was responsible for initiating and directing the acquisition of Macpac last year which played a part in boosting the groups FY18 result.

He will take on the new role as of 31 March.

In his position as managing director of SRG's outdoor retailing department, he was also responsible for the BFC and Rays businesses which he helped overhaul.

Before joining SRG, Heraghty (pictured below) held many senior management roles at Pacific Brands Limited (ASX: PBG), and he believes his extensive eperience in retail will be valauble in comprehending the evolving sector.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to navigate a great Australian company through the radical changes rapidly reshaping the retail sector globally," he says.

"In an era where customers have greater demands and choice than ever before in what, where, when and how they want to buy, our customer-centric approach and engaged team can help differentiate Super Retail Group and drive the next phase of growth around our four core brands."

"With team members at the heart of Super Retail Group's business, one of my priorities will be to build on our strong culture of teamwork and team member pride."

In October, Birtles announced he would be retiring after 18 years with the company of which 13 were as managing director and chief executive.

Having seen the group through the highs and lows of a turbulent retail industry, he backs the board's decision to appoint Heraghty, noting they will work closely together over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

"I can assure you that Super Retail Group is in good hands. I've worked closely with Anthony for four years, he's a strong and experienced leader who has helped modernise the business," says Birtles.

"Not only does he have a terrific grasp of the business but he knows what drives our customers and understands what we can offer them.

"I remain very optimistic about the future for Super Retail Group and will be working hard to ensure a seamless handover."

Super Retail Group chair Sally Pitkin says the SRG board is confident in its choice to appoint Heraghty.

"Following a rigorous interview process, the Board concluded that Anthony had the best combination of attributes and values to lead the next era of growth for the Super Retail Group," she says.
