State Government proposes another extension to the Gold Coast light rail

With the Commonwealth Games done and dusted, the Queensland State Government is considering extending the G:Link light rail system again.

The next stage, "stage three", will be considered by the government in early 2019.

The preferred extension runs approximately seven kilometres down the centre of the Gold Coast Highway between the Broadbeach South light rail station and Burleigh Heads and will include up to eight new stations.

Both the State Government and the City of Gold Coast are contributing $5 million each to investigate the business case of extending the tram line further south.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says now is the time to look into further improving public transport in the city, considering the success of the system during the Commonwealth Games.

"It makes sense to plan now for this vital project, which will enhance the lifestyle and economic opportunities for the Gold Coast," says Bailey.

"Light rail was designed to be delivered in stages to respond to the city's growth and the first two stages of light rail have proven it to be a viable alternative to using the car."

The $10 million planning stage will involve consultation with affected communities in the second half of this year.

The Gold Coast City Council is also planning on extending the tram line even further south than Burleigh Heads.
