Startup event to showcase Brisbane's driven female entrepreneurs

A group of Brisbane's most ambitious female entrepreneurs is set to converge on River City Labs next month as the tech hub hosts its Women Startup Weekend (WSW) event from 9 to 11 February.

This will be the second time River City Labs has hosted the event which is run in tandem with the Global Women Startup Weekend movement across 18 countries.

Organisers say the weekend will attract a crowd of like-minded women who are either in business or hoping to start their own venture, including 'intrapreneurs' from the corporate world, social media influencers and so-called 'mumpreneurs'.

Peta Ellis, CEO of River City Labs, says diversity is a key component of WSW and it's a unique opportunity to engage with other tech savvy women who shine in areas including coding, marketing, sales and digital entrepreneurship.

"It is the perfect opportunity for women from all walks of life to come together, commit to themselves and give their idea half a chance in a supportive environment," says Ellis.

"Women make amazing founders. Our multitasking ability truly comes into play when running a business, yet many of us hold back due to thinking we already have too much on."

The event will be held across three days and attendees will have a chance to pitch their ideas before the best ones are voted on.

Teams will then be formed and will work together on bringing their chosen ideas to market. On the final night, each team will present to a panel of judges where a winner will be announced.

Ellis encourages anyone who is considering the event to take part, as she believes many of the best business ideas often come from unassuming places.

"My advice to anyone sitting on the fence is take one weekend for yourself, have a crack," she says.

"I am always surprised where the best ideas and founders come from.

"The mums on maternity leave with a wealth of experience sitting idle, the corporate employees who are frustrated with internal roadblocks to creativity and the humble newbie who came to 'have a look and stayed for the whole weekend' tend to be the stand outs every time."

Throughout the event, teams will have access to mentors and other founders who will help them during the planning, development, market and implementation phase.
