The 5km walk is being held in Brisbane and regional centres including the Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Townsville, Toowoomba and Cairns.
The event aims to raise $100,000 to support pro bono legal services of private firms and community legal centres for disadvantaged members of the community who are unable to afford legal representation. This includes those who are homeless or living in poverty, experiencing debilitating mental illness, or have a social disadvantage or disability.
Now in its eighth year, the Brisbane Legal Walk will be led by The Honourable Tim Carmody, Chief Justice of Queensland, from the Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law Complex at 7am.
The event is organised by QPILCH (Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House Inc), an organisation formed in 2001 by the legal profession to address the unmet need when government funding for legal aid was withdrawn in the late 1990s.
QPILCH now operates 19 Homeless Persons' Legal Clinics around the state, the Mental Health Law Practice which includes free legal clinics in hospitals, and community centres and law school student clinics.
