LOCAL COMPANY SCORES SLICE OF $1.5B NORTHERN LINK

BRISBANE infrastructure developer BMD Group has been awarded the hotly-contested tender for the Northern Link project, as part of the Transcity consortium.

The infrastructure giant will receive a share of around $450 million in the project.

BMD Group executive director Scott Power (pictured) says the process for the $1.5 billion tender has been ‘agonising’ but the result will help drive Brisbane towards its tagline as a ‘new world city’.

“It’s a great result for BMD, it’s great for Brisbane and as with any process like this they keep you guessing and this one is like no other in terms of the probity and confidentiality involved,” he told Brisbane Business News today.

“I think some of our competitors have tried to play up that we’re an international consortium, but the reality is that BMD was the only truly local company in the consortia. We’ve been here for more than 30 years and we’re a major component of Transcity.

“(Spanish-based) Acciona has 40 per cent, while Ghella from Italy and BMD both have 30 per cent, but we’re an integrated team, a local team.”

The Northern Link project will involve a tunnel linking the Centenary Motorway and the Inner City Bypass, with plans to open to traffic in 2014.

BMD came in at No.6 in the Brisbane Business News Top 50 Private Companies edition with annual revenues of $847 million. The company employs 1200 people.
