National compensation company Australian Accident Helpline has launched a new campaign to find Australia's Next Top Lawyer and is sweetening the deal for undergraduate law students with a $5,000 cash prize.
The competition aims to provide law students an opportunity to set themselves apart from future colleagues and make them more competitive in the industry.
Undergraduate entrants are required to submit a 3,000-word essay, detailing what they think is 'the most important development in Australian legal industry'.
Managing director of Australian Accident helpline Liam Milner says it's concerning how the legal sector is becoming more competitive with firms embracing technology and downsizing on staff, a fact which the competition aims to address.
"It is worrying that there could be a shortage of good lawyers in the future," he says.
"An experienced lawyer can be the difference between life or death in some countries, the innocent ending up in jail, or big businesses walking over the little guys.
"In the short term, practices will become more profitable, but it's simply not sustainable in the long run."
All entries will be judged by Australian Accident Helpline's panel of senior lawyers, and the results of the competition will be announced in October 2018.
