Hyatt Regency leads the way

HYATT Regency Sanctuary Cove will be used as a best practices case study to prove that implementation of relatively easy initiatives can drastically reduce water usage.

Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management has recognised the successful water-saving strategies and will present the case study to assist other hotels and resorts in reducing their water usage.

Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove’s director of engineering Ian Crookston, has been developing and implementing the initiative for the past 12 years.

“Back in 1996, the hotel was using around 140,000 kilolitres of water each year. Since that time, we have implemented a range of water-saving initiatives that have cut our water use by 70 per cent,” says Crookston.

“We are now using only around 38,000 kilolitres per year, which is terrific for the environment. The significant decrease in water use has also contributed to a dramatic reduction in cost.”
