FROM A LONE LAWYER TO A TEAM OF 100

MULLINS Lawyers has celebrated 35 years in business, attributing the success and longevity of the firm to "being respected, respectful and respectable".

The firm was established by the late Patrick Mullins OAM in 1980, with his sons John Mullins and Patrick Mullins Jnr becoming partners in 1981.

The firm has grown and diversified significantly since inception and now boasts more than 50 lawyers, 18 partners and 95 staff.

"We had an office of about 100sqm when we were first established and now our staff common room is bigger than our original office," says managing partner John Mullins.

However, the firm says its founding values have never changed, including maintaining the reputation of the brand.

"Being respected, respectful and respectable, acting with decency, honour and being as fair as you can has always been an important thing to me, my father before me and the partners of our firm," says Mullins.

"We all have wins and occasionally we will have losses, but over a period of time measured in decades not weeks or months and even years, maintaining a consistency of decency in how you practice is a real achievement.

"The thing that my father would be most proud of is that we have continued to maintain our integrity."

Mullins says the firm also prides itself on building long-term relationships with its clients and its people and says the firm is proud of the fact that it has many clients today who were with them when they started.

Mullins adds that stable and growing partnership and the personal commitment, talent and dedication of the partners has helped to deliver a successful 35 years.

The plan is to continue growing the firm, with Mullins saying that "if you are not growing, you are standing still".

He says the challenge that all law firms face is staying relevant and important to clients.

"I have always believed that there is a place for good law firms, whether they be big, small, international or national," he says.

"It doesn't matter how big you are, it matters how good you are and how good your relationships are with your clients.

"Client expectations are evolving, the speed of transactions is evolving and the challenge of law firms is to evolve to be important to clients.

"Firms have ceased to exist because they have been unable to respond to challenges of practice. That won't be our fate.  We will continue to create our own future and we will continue to succeed because of the skill, personal strength and commitment of the people that make up this firm."

To celebrate 35 years in operation, the firm's lawyers hosted a high tea for employees and family members.

Mullins Lawyers offers a select broad range of legal services, including: property, insurance, intellectual property, employment and industrial relations, banking and finance, liquor and gaming, wills and estate planning, business structuring and trusts, compulsory acquisition, litigation and commercial dispute resolution and insolvency.
