Cannatrek to begin medicinal cannabis production in Queensland

Australian medicinal cannabis producer Cannatrek is adding to its large-scale growing capability after receiving a permit to begin growing the drug in Queensland.

The company has received a growing permit for its Queensland facility from the Office of Drug Control (ODC). The facility has a total growing area of 3,200m2 in climate-controlled greenhouses.

This announcement follows the recent news from Cannatrek that it will build a $160 million production facility in Shepparton, Victoria.

The Shepparton site is expected to be one of the world's largest cannabis production facilities and will produce around 160 tonnes of the product per year.

Cannatrek CEO Tommy Huppert says the green light from the ODC for its Queensland site will enable the company to become one of the Australia's leading medicinal cannabis companies.

"Cannatrek recently received its first shipment of medicinal cannabis seeds at its Queensland facility and we expect more seed varieties to arrive soon," says Huppert.

"We will trial a variety of genetic strains in order to locate the best strains and then use those strains to produce up to 5 tonne of diverse, low-cost medicines for the growing number of patients in Australia and overseas.

"Cannatrek is positioned as a leading provider of medicinal cannabis products and services to doctors, pharmacies and patients across Australia as a licensed importer, wholesaler and now, local cultivator."
