BRISBANE crushing and screening equipment manufacturer Lincom Group has won the naming rights to the Gold Coast Turf Club’s $300,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on Prime Ministers Cup race-day this month.
The announcement came during an exclusive 150 Club race-day afternoon function – named appropriately after the limited 150 ticketholders who each bought into the festivities at $2750 each.
It may not be as cheap as your typical RSL raffle ticket – but with all eyes set on the PM Cup’s premier race the gamble has certainly paid off for the group, which incorporates Lincom Pacific Equipment, Powerscreen Australasia and Lincom Equipment Rentals.
Group operations manager Stephen Watterson and wife Michelle attended the 150 Club function and accepted the prize on behalf of the company.
“It was a big surprise. I have a close relationship with one of the directors at the club and was approached to go into the 150 club,” says Watterson.
“Two and a half grand is two and a half grand, but I thought we’d give it a crack and am happy to say it’s more than paid-off.”
Watterson is ecstatic with the brand exposure Lincom will get on race-day, though admits he has some excuses to come up with before he can make the trip down the Pacific Motorway on Saturday, May 8.
“I’m in a bit of a sticky spot as it’s my sister’s 32nd birthday on that day. But an event like this, I’ve got to take some of the Lincom boys down for a big day,” he says.
The 150 club second and third prizes, both naming rights to a $50,000 race on PM Cup race-day, were won by Brisbane Isuzu and the club’s high profile neighbours, yearling auctioneers Magic Millions.
Gold Coast Turf Club corporate marketing co-ordinator Michelle Christensen, says the event not only has become a ‘must-go’ for more than 6000 punters, but has evolved into a stepping stone for successful jockeys and racehorses.
“This was never as obvious as when Might and Power took out the A.D Hollindale Stakes in 1998 and backed up by taking the honours in the 1998 and 1999 Melbourne Cup,” says Christensen.
“The $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas has also proved a launching pad for some of Australia’s greatest racehorses.
“2005 winner Eremein went on to win five Group 1s and amassed over $4 million in prize money. Australian two-uear-old champion Fashions Afield took out the 2006 race.
“The ladies are looked after with ‘touch ups’ in the pamper lounge, the Harbour Town Fashions on the Field Competition offers amazing prize packages and everyone can party the afternoon away with entertainment from high energy band Charisma on the Outlook.
