PORT GETS $110M BOOST

PORT OF BRISBANE has received a $110 million upgrade in response to the hub’s growing contribution to the economy.

The announcement of final stage improvements to the major road network is a welcomed project for construction workers, as well as the local economy which will benefit from improved efficiency.

A daily workforce of 2500 commutes on the Port’s road, while 1500 trucks carrying 1.1 million containers passes through the area annually, with that figure growing four per cent per annum.

The upgrade to the 3.2km stretch has been funded by the Port of Brisbane and earlier today was praised by the Queensland Government, which will offer continued assistance to ensure the network upgrade meets guidelines.

“The Port of Brisbane is a vital artery for the Queensland economy,” says premier Campbell Newman.

“The upgrade will bring more than 400 jobs to Queensland during construction and support the Port of Brisbane’s massive growth, productivity and competiveness.

“We are pleased to work with the company to help create infrastructure that improves safety, efficiency and capacity.”

Port of Brisbane chief executive Russell Smith says the upgrade will more than double current traffic capacity, essential in view of an anticipated increase in demand.

“It will double the current traffic capacity from 12,500 to 28,750 vehicles, or approximately 130 per cent,” says Russell.

“The health and safety of our workforce and those using the Port Drive is paramount so we’re happy to bring these works forward.

“The Port of Brisbane is an economic engine for Queensland and it is critical that adequate investment in infrastructure remains a priority to support future growth, productivity and competitiveness of both the Port and our customers.”

Construction on the project is expected to begin next year and will include upgrades to intersections at Kite Street, Port Drive, Osprey Drive and Tanker Street as well as the construction of dual carriageways.
