MINING MAGNATE BRINGS NEW HOTEL TO CBD

MINING magnate Sam Chong has unveiled plans to open a 246 room hotel in the Brisbane CBD by January 2014.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts will manage the hotel, which will be branded as a Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane, after securing an agreement with Felicity Hotel, a company controlled by the Chong family.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has taken the announcement as a demonstration of confidence in the city.

“This is great news for Brisbane,” says Cr Quirk.

“Internationally recognised branded hotel chains are important to Brisbane as they resonate with international visitors and also build on Brisbane’s reputation as a desirable tourist destination.”

Brisbane Marketing CEO John Aitken says more hotel rooms in Brisbane mean more tourists, as well as more conventions.

“Brisbane already attracts high calibre business events from around the world, and more hotel rooms in our city will strengthen Brisbane’s ability to accommodate more of these,” he says.
