A raft of government contracts is driving data technology company ICON Software Solutions’ growth, with FY11 revenues on track to hit $1.4 million just three years into operations.
Co-founder and CEO Marie Eedy attributes the company’s rapid rise to its expertise within the government sector.
“We made a very conscious decision to stick within the one market,” says Eedy.
“We know this market place very well and are recognised within the public sector as experts in what we do. Creating a new software product for markets we aren’t familiar with is too risky and unnecessary for us.
“The whole team at ICON understands our key market intricately. We know the buying cycles, budget approval periods and how to price products to reduce the need for our customers to go through the tender process.
“This approach has seen us pick up many council contracts and one great thing about the public sector is that customers aren’t shy about referring a company who has delivered for them.”
Using the catch phrase ‘connect and communicate with the community’, ICON specialises in the design, development and integration of local government data solutions.
The company services 17 State Government and city council customers across the country with both software products designed and written in-house as well as international products implemented on a partnership basis.
ICON’s innovative approach to data management has seen Ballina, Rockdale, Mosman, Bankstown, Parramatta, Penrith and Taree councils all sign up for its e-planning services.
This year ICON also delivered a significant Brisbane City Council contract to supply and install the mobile version of Canadian product FieldWorker for Brisbane City Works employees.
“The software allows Brisbane City Works to do all their mobile data collection for various traffic infrastructures on a simple to use platform. This can then be easily integrated with other IT systems,” explains Eedy.
“FieldWorker is one of the international companies that we have an exclusive supply partnership with. We’ve recently signed partnership agreements with a New Zealand company as well as US company CivicPlus, which clients comprise more than 600 local governments across North America.
“The agreements mean we can introduce their products into the Australian market exclusively and they can do the same with our software solutions.”
