THIESS SECURES $325M CSG CONTRACT

BRISBANE engineering services company Thiess has been awarded a major infrastructure project contract from coal-seam gas (CSG) producer Queensland Gas Company (QGC).

The $325 million deal involves constructing six field compression stations and one central processing plant at QGC’s Queensland Curtis Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project.

Thiess managing director Bruce Munro (pictured) believes Thiess was chosen for its experience in geographically diverse projects.

“Thiess has a culture of valuing and building long-term partnerships and we are proud to work with QGC on this project of state significance,” he says.

Located about 30km northwest of the southern Queensland town of Dalby, the facilities will process CSG for transport via an underground pipeline to Gladstone. The gas will then be converted into LNG on Curtis Island for export.

“We are (also) going to have a number of road works to do and site works on concrete, steel structural works. A big part of it will be the logistics to get all of the many thousands of parts that make up this project from Brisbane out to remote sites like Chinchilla and Dalby,” says Munro.

“It is all going to boil down to performance and developing the relationship as this project unfolds.”

Works begin later this month and are expected to be completed by April 2013, creating up to 570 jobs during peak of construction.

“Many of those we will recruit (from) around the site. We are (also) going to have to bring in a number of people with skills to that site. We will maximise the amount of contractors we use for equipment hire, labour, fencing and subcontractors, so I think it will be a real boost,” says Munro.

“But one thing I ask of all our staff and contractors is they must comply with our safety requirements and need to meet the safety and quality standards needed on a project like this.”
