TAPPING INTO NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK

A Burleigh Heads national electrical contractor is looking to secure work on the National Broadband Network (NBN).

After recording a 53 per cent jump in fiscal 2011 revenue to $4.5 million, Matt Electric is aiming to capitalise on the NBN roll-out.

“The NBN has a similar scale and will provide a lot of work,” says Hanley.

“We see fibre-optic networking and communication as the next big thing for us. We’re in the right kind of business to get involved and benefit.”

Matt Electric has serviced companies including BHP Billiton, Queensland Rail, Myer, Woolworths, McDonalds, Caltex, QBuild, Dan Murphy’s Liquor Barn, the Holiday Inn and Department of Defence.

The company also completed a $400,000 fit-out for Fitness First and education stimulus projects at Bellevue Park State School ($300,000), Ormeau State School ($280,000), Burleigh Heads State School ($300,000), Clover Hill State School ($150,000) and Palm Beach Currumbin State High School ($550,000).

Next on the list are 3D cinema upgrades for Event Cinemas’ owner AHL in Brisbane, helping the company toward forecast growth of 30 per cent in FY12.

“We had to tender for these jobs and include both our package and pricing capabilities,” says Hanley.

“Winning both the Master Builder of the Year 2010 and Electrical and Communications Association Excellence in Safety Management 2008 awards was a testament to our capability and helped us secure work when we came to a selection panel of builders.”

Matt Electric also has offices in Brisbane and Melbourne, from which it plans to expand its offering.

“There are many commercial projects in Victoria, including town halls, train stations, TAFE colleges, universities and office fitouts,” says Hanley.

“We will open offices in other states too. If we get involved in the mining industry, we might open shop in Mackay or elsewhere in northern Queensland.”

To support these expansion plans, Matt Electric plans to hire data technicians, audio-visual staff and security contractors in the new year.
