Taking on the telcos

GCOMM is responsible for creating easy to implement and efficient systems to small businesses as well as large channel partners in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. This month the company scored the IT and multimedia Gold Coast Business Excellence Award. Internet and data services manager Adam Tessieri says major partnerships are on the horizon.

Congratulations on winning the IT and multimedia category of the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.

GCOMM’s continuing commitment to providing competitive and diverse IT and communication services to both our direct customers based in the Gold Coast region and also our large Channel Partner base in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne has allowed us to continue to grow from strength to strength in this challenging economic environment.

How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
GCOMM prides itself on outstanding account management and customer service. Testament to this is our client base, many of whom have been with us for more than 10 years. We deliver innovative and cost effective solutions involving all aspects of IT and telecommunications. We partner with other businesses that have the same core values and we find this synergy to be the key to our growth and ongoing success.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve face within the business?
I think competing with the likes of Telstra and other large telco’s presents an ongoing challenge to GCOMM and our staff that we absolutely love. Our team is intelligent, enthusiastic and committed to providing our customers and partners with a better alternative to IT and telecommunication services that you simply can’t get from large conglomerates.

What has been most rewarding?
Being a part of the growing maturity of the business as its staff have continuously improved and further developed their skills has been a pleasure and a great privilege. Working with such a stable and committed team of people is the single most important strength of this business. Over the years we have built a large portfolio of successful customer projects that demonstrates a growing organisation more than capable of competing with and beating the largest in the industry.

Who are some of your clients? Explain some projects you have worked on.
Our clients and partners include a wide range of companies, many large ASX-listed organisations, mid-tier telco service providers who prefer to deal with GCOMM than directly with Telstra or AAPT and many small and medium sized IT support companies who choose to partner with GCOMM to build their own recurring revenue income.

We recently completed a project for Nortec Employment Services which won a government tender which resulted in a 300 per cent increase in office locations across Australia. GCOMM was able to design a solution that was carrier diverse, deployed end to end within three weeks of order acceptance and of the highest speed available to allow for seamless data and voice inter-office communications. Coupled with the fact that we could also supply the desktop and server infrastructure to facilitate this growth, an end to end solution meeting all of the clients IT requirements was achieved.

Can you explain some of the issues facing the IT industry in the current economic climate?
I think the current economic climate presents IT professionals and their organisations with an opportunity to review and improve their businesses by utilising technology that will save them time and money, whilst seeking out more cost effective communication solutions that under previous good economic times may not have otherwise received any focus. GCOMM interconnects best of breed services with Australia’s major telecommunication providers as one simple network for our customers and partners, achieving cost savings the large Telco’s alone cannot hope to achieve.

What results can clients expect if they utilise your services?
GCOMMs clients expect and are delivered results, whether it be designing a complex national network connecting multiple diverse telecommunication providers to deliver a redundant and scalable network, to consolidation of large server environments utilising advance virtualisation technology that results in cost and time savings that do impact the bottom line, GCOMM always delivers.

What is most challenging about operating in a highly competitive market such as the IT industry?
I think competition is a great thing, it means you can’t take your eyes of the ball and you always need to be watching your competitors just as closely as you are working with your customers. Technology and communications move very quickly, being able to adapt to the changing landscape and continuing to deliver value to our customers is what makes GCOMM tick.

What does the future hold for GCOMM? Are you planning on expanding? What is your predicted growth for 2010?
GCOMM is predominantly expanding through our channel partners, we are committed to our partners and growing their businesses through utilising our national network.

GCOMM is a well-established organisation in southeast Queensland, we intend to grow our revenues by over 20 per cent in the coming 12 months through partnerships with like-minded companies in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

What about branding?
GCOMM was previously known as Data FX Online. As our products and services expanded, as well as our focus on wholesale channel partners we decided to re-brand in order to reflect our new ambitions.

GCOMM is short for General Communications and coupled with the phrases ‘technology’, ‘connectivity’ and ‘partnering’ presents our customers with a more accurate description of our organisations purpose.
