Plugged into Super Cheap: GCBEA July

Written on the 1 December 2010

JULY 2010

An innovative user-friendly design has secured KT Cable Accessories a wholesale contract with Super Cheap Auto Group for its trailer plugs and adapters.

The Ormeau-based company has been wholesaling its auto electrical products since 1994 but really started making waves in the industry after developing trailer accessories with built-in LED circuit testers in 2006.

As part of a full product range overhaul, Super Cheap Auto is in the process of creating a ‘better and best’ option for its product range.

While it was the market-first products that initially caught the eye of the Brisbane-based publicly listed retail giant, the entire KT Cable’s trailer range will soon sold in the group’s 260 stores.

“While initially Super Cheap Auto was only interested in stocking our LED range, they had a look at our full range of products and could see that were far superior to what they currently sold,” says KT Cable’s general manager Adam Middleton.

“The built-in circuit tester basically tells you if a circuit is faulty, so the consumer can easily work out if a wiring problem is located on the vehicle or the trailer.

“And our range of round trailer plugs and sockets are built from a one-piece plastic mould that is not only far easier to wire-up, but there is no risk of the centre wiring being pulled out the plug body –a common problem with the standard round plug design.”

The company’s latest big seller is its trailer coil adapters which unlike other trailer adapter designs are length adjustable and include the LED technology.

Middleton says ‘tens of thousands’ of trailer accessories are being sent to Super Cheap Auto distribution centres but highlights the company’s goal to establish further export avenues.

“We currently export to the UK through an agent who wholesales our products to various retail stores,” he says.

“We are experiencing a lot of growth at the moment and would like to explore opportunities in other export markets, particularly the United States. We are also completing the designs for a new range of metal trailer plugs which we hope to get into the market in the near future.”

In 2007, KT Cables and Accessories were acquired by South Australia ASX-listed company AMA Group for $7 million.

In the half-yearly report for December 2009, AMA recorded an income of $2.7 million for ‘cables and accessories operations’ from a total $23 million half yearly turnover.

KT Cables and Accessories has taken out the Gold Coast Business Excellence retail, wholesale and distribution award this month. In 2006 it won the mayor’s innovation award for its LED products.
