Lunch with Graeme Samuel

THE Australia-Israeli Chamber of Commerce is hosting a business lunch featuring Graeme Samuel (pictured), chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Some sectors of the business community have argued that the current economic conditions require the ACCC to lighten the enforcement of competition law – a shift the ACCC has consistently rejected.

Recent developments in both competition and consumer law are likely to bolster the ACCC’s enforcement powers. The criminalisation of cartel conduct is recognition that this behaviour stifles competition and innovation, drives up prices and is detrimental to the economy.

The proposed Australian Consumer Law reforms will unify Australia’s consumer protection regime providing the ACCC with new powers to seek better redress for consumers, and provide certainty for consumers and business through the consistency and efficiencies of a single national consumer law.

Samuel took up the position as chairman in 2003 and is an associate member of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
The event will take place on July 31.
