LADY CILENTO CLINCHES TOP DESIGN AWARD

DESIGNS inspired by nature have cleaned up at the Queensland Architecture Awards in Brisbane.

Hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects, the jury awarded 52 accolades to 43 projects from a wide range of categories.

The Lady Cilento Children's Hospital was the big winner on the night, also taking out the F.D.G Stanley Award for Public Architecture, Karl Langer Award for Urban Design and the Art and Architecture prize.

The project was designed in a joint venture between Conrad Gargett and Lyons Architecture, based on the concept of a 'living tree'.

Conrad Gargett managing director Bruce Wolfe says the award is a testament to seven years of intense planning, design and construction.

"We certainly appreciate the recognition by the Institute of Architects of Lady Cilento Children's Hospital and the hard work of the Conrad Gargett Lyons team on this project," Wolfe says.

The jury selected the healthcare facility for 'its unwavering philosophy of integrating art into every aspect of its fabric, function and ethos' and goal to 'bring delight and diversion to the lives of sick children and the people who care for them'.

The University of Queensland Global Change Institute by HASSELL won several awards for their work in sustainable design.

Planchonella House in north Queensland by Jesse Bennett Architect Builder won the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture.

Projects that received an award will now vie for the national title in November.
