Charity lesson for UQ business students

JUNE 2010

AS part of the Entrepreneurship and New Ventures course, eight UQ Business School students are helping Brisbane-based charity Vital Connection provide services to Brisbane’s homeless and disadvantaged.

The project was initiated by the students as a way to gain experience in basic business principles including negotiating sponsorships, raising funds for non-profit organisations and engaging with the wider community.

Team leader Clare Gallimore says the project is a rewarding way for students to contribute to the community while gaining valuable business experience.

“Awareness-wise we’ve been getting feedback from pamphlets and flyers, with people contacting us about ways they can help. We’ve also had a sausage sizzle and have been selling raffle tickets at UQ, throughout the city and to family and friends,” she says.

UQ business student and team member Victor Petelo, says the project has boosted his confidence in dealing with corporate executives.

“Before this course, I thought I could never approach businesses to speak to head managers let alone ask for sponsorship. But now I am confident I can hold my own and approach other businesses in the future,” he says.

“Also, I have improved on my business negotiation skills and a key skill which I have found most vital is organisation. I hope to give back to the community and help Vital Connection not only through labour but by offering my business skills and knowledge.

“As a group I hope we at least created more awareness of the issues of homelessness and disadvantage within Brisbane.”
